The research described in this paper identifies those aspects of the work of the headteacher in secondary schools which make for job satisfaction and job dissatisfaction. It then considers the relationship of those aspects and, building upon the work of other researchers in this field, offers a model of job satisfaction which is unique. In view of the current difficulties experienced in attracting applications for headship and in retaining experienced headteachers, such an understanding of what makes for job satisfaction and dissatisfaction is of paramount importance. The paper ends with a brief consideration of how this model might be used as the basis for further research efforts aimed at deepening our understanding of headship.
