Excitons in transition metal dichalcogenide heterostructures experience a periodic moir\'e potential, featuring deep wells with trigonal (C₃ᵥ) symmetry. This paper studies the localization of interlayer excitons at these potential wells and the influence of the localized state's symmetry on the optical selection rules. Degenerate doublets from the symmetry group's E representation are found to dominate the optical response in the localized state sector. The authors discuss how these bright excitons respond to external perturbations, laying the groundwork for controlling their optical response.
