The structure of PVD‐deposited MoS 2 films, viewed in relation to the defectfree crystalline form, present opportunities to intervene in order to improve and adapt the film properties to different tribological situations. By using modern PVD deposition technologies, it is possible to create new film structures by multilayering and co‐deposition. Significant reductions in the friction coefficient, and increases in the sliding lifetime in humid atmospheres have been measured. The historical use of MoS 2 in spacecraft can be extended to industrial environments such as in dry or reduced‐lubricant machining. Anti‐adhesive properties are additionally important, for example in extruding and moulding.
