Currently two frames of reference exist for reflecting on addictions: a diseae concept and a spiritual concept. Each of these concepts supplies categories for analyzing the phenomenon of addiction. Individual therapists tend to employ one of these frames of reference, neglecting or rejecting the other one. But each frame of reference yields a helpful method for treating addictions. Mutual respect, based on familiarity with both concepts, will allow therapists of both persuasions to complement and cooperate in achieving more effective treatment programs.
