Review compiles Ayurvedic properties and modern therapeutic applications of Shringataka in health.
Shringataka (Trapa bispinosa Roxb.), commonly known as water chestnut (Singhada), is an important aquatic medicinal plant described under Phala Varga in Ayurveda. It possesses Balya, Brimhana, Grahi and Vrishya properties and is particularly beneficial in Pitta disorders. Owing to its Madhura-Kashaya Rasa, Guru-Snigdha Guna, Sheeta Virya and Madhura Vipaka, it nourishes tissues, improves strength and supports reproductive health. Modern studies have demonstrated antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and anti-diabetic activities. This review compiles Ayurvedic literature, pharmacodynamic properties, therapeutic applications and scientific evidence regarding Shringataka.
