Qualitative study uncovers barbershops' role in shaping deviance trajectories in communities, suggesting new intervention strategies.
Barbershops have historically been framed in criminological research as crime-generating spaces, yet recent scholarship points to their role as important community institutions. This study explores how barbershops influence deviance across the life course using qualitative interviews with 26 barbers from 20 shops in Los Angeles County. Guided by life course theory and places-in-neighborhoods theory, we find that barbershops can serve as age-graded sites of intervention and regulation. Rather than viewing barbershops as passive gathering spaces, this study highlights their role as culturally meaningful institutions that can shape life trajectories, strengthen informal social control, and contribute to crime prevention over time.
