The impact of abuse and subsequent intervention strategies on emotional development was examined for a group of 30 physically abused children between the ages of five and 12. Results indicated that emotional adjustment, as measured by psychological test scores, was differentially affected by characteristics of the abuse experience and interventions. Implications for the use of psychiatric treatment and foster care placement in the management of child abuse cases are discussed.
