The incorporation of 5-bromo-2-deoxyuridine (BUDR) into cellular DNA of mammalian cells cultured in vitro inhibited the expression of differentiated function. Synchronized B16 melanoma cells incorporating BUDR during a single period of DNA synthesis, or a part of a single cycle, were unable to produce as much melanin as those similarly exposed to equimolar amounts of thymidine.
