Analyzes seismic performance in shear walls with defects, suggesting effective repair using UHPC.
Reinforced concrete (RC) shear walls during construction may sometimes have quality defects such as holes at the base, honeycomb formations, and exposed reinforcing bars. To ensure the safe use of this defective shear wall, a repair method using UHPC is proposed and its seismic performance is analyzed in this study. The proposed repair method can successfully fix various construction-related defects in shear walls. Moreover, the seismic performance of UHPC-repaired shear walls can be restored to same level with that of intact shear wall. Specifically, a comparative study of low weekly repeated load tests is conducted between the UHPC-repaired shear wall and the intact shear wall. According to the test results, the shear wall repaired by UHPC can improve the pinching effect, restore the bearing capacity, increase the cumulative energy dissipation by 43.2%, and increase the ductility by 22.2%. To further compare the seismic performance between the UHPC-repaired shear wall and the intact shear wall, numerical simulation utilizing the ABAQUS software examines the impacts of defect area size, vertical load, and aspect ratio. The analysis results demonstrate that the repair effect of UHPC on the seismic performance of shear wall with local hole construction defects is good.
