The relationship of micelles to other types of organized structures formed by amphipathic monomers such as monolayers, bilayers, membranes, and adsorbed layers is pointed out. The patterns of self‐association followed by micelle‐forming surfactants is examined in terms of a general association model. The interactions responsible for micelle formation and the characteristic features of the local microenvironments of micelles are reviewed. The nature of solubilization by micelles is discussed in terms of the forces of interaction involved and problems of location, distribution and orientation.
