The effect of substrate materials on the recording sensitivity in optical storage media was investigated. Evaporated Te films on various kinds of substrates were used as optical storage media. The recording sensitivity in Te films varied with the substrate materials. The temperature rise during exposure of laser beam was calculated on the basis of a thermal diffusion model. The temperature at threshold pulse duration was found to vary with the substrate materials. Therefore, the recording sensitivity is considered to depend not only on the thermal diffusion, but also on other factors such as a surface condition of substrate.
