The purpose of this paper is to obtain comparison theorems for the second order Riccati equation r'' + 3rr' + r' + r³ + p(t) = 0, where p is nonnegative and continuous on $[a,b)$, 0 < a < b + ∞. This yields several new comparison theorems and disconjugacy criteria for the third order linear equation $y''' + p(t)y = 0$.
