The work on porosity formation and kinetic hydrogen redistribution in A356 aluminium alloy castings by Chiesa et al. was re-examined and analysed in the present study on a semi-empirical basis. The calculated volume percent of porosity in A356 aluminium castings from this study, Vp(%) = K'C0{1—exp[—(tf/tτ) n]}/Pg, can satisfactorily explain the experimental work by Chiesa et al. In the equation, K’,n are constant; C0 is the initial hydrogen content of melt; tf, ttau; are the local solidification time and relaxation time, respectively; and Pg is the gas pressure in the pore.
