A procedure is described for rapidly examining the sensitivity of the plasma chromatograph to volatiles from gas chromatographic stationary phases (column bleed) to aid in the selection of liquid phases most appropriate for use in a combined gas chromatography-plasma chromatographic system. Studies were performed on the effect of bleed from 19 common gas chromatographic liquid phases under both oxidative and nonoxidative conditions in both the positive and negative modes. The results indicate that the selection of a liquid phase for optimum chromatographic separation may have to be secondary to the consideration of its effect on plasma chromatographic performance.
