This article describes a holistic model for treating lesbian and gay people who are addicted to alcohol (or other drugs) that was developed at Pride Institute, a 36-bed facility established in March 1986 near Minneapolis, Minnesota. The author points out that a larger percentage of alcoholism is found among homosexuals than in the American population as a whole, then discusses some of the similarities and differences between homosexual and heterosexual alcoholics. The treatment model, outlined in the final section, consists of three phases (assessment, clinical, and aftercare) plus a weekend family program for family members and other concerned people.
