This paper addresses the problem of determining, from passive measurements on moving receivers, the position of an unknown source of electromagnetic (or acoustic) waves. This source is assumed to lie on a known surface, and the wave propagation environment is assumed to be free space. This paper addresses the problem in which there are uncertainties in sensing parameters such as the relative sensor positions, clock synchronization, and antenna beam patterns. To form an image, we use a synthetic aperture approach together with a generalised‐likelihood‐ratio statistic, and show that the resulting imaging algorithm is a non‐coherent one. It has lower resolution than the coherent algorithm, but is more robust to uncertainties in the sensing parameters. The paper includes a variety of simulation results showing the effect of the sensing uncertainties and comparing the effects of the non‐coherent algorithm versus the coherent one.
