The authors describe four cases of giant hypertrophic gastritis (Ménétrier's disease), which demonstrate that the disease is easily overlooked clinically. In all four cases the definite diagnosis was established after morphological examination of the surgical specimens. The importance of gastroscopy, gastric secretory studies, studies of the protein metabolism and X‐ray investigation of the upper gastrointestinal tract for the clinical diagnosis is emphasized, even if a definite diagnosis seems possible only after examination of full‐thickness surgical biopsy specimens.
