In order to be able to study the influence of the position of substituents in the aromatic nuclei of compounds of the tetraphenylethane type on the possibility of dissociation, several of these substances were synthesized. It was found that the presence of four ortho‐methyl groups per diphenyl‐methyl in this series is an essential condition for the occurrence of dissociation upon heating in solvents like benzene, toluene, and naphthalene.
