An apparatus has been developed for performing zone solidification under the polarizing microscope. The apparatus has been designed specifically for the oriented crystallisation of polymers, taking into account their susceptibility to degradation and depolymerisation. Temperature gradients of up to 400 degrees C cm -1 have been obtained, with polymer residence times in the melt being of the order of about one hour.
