A model is developed for the ferroelectric‐to‐paraelectric phase transition in LiNbO 3 and LiTaO 3 . The model is consistent with literature reports of nonstoichiometry, point defect formation, and phase transformation behavior. The model uses lithium Frenkel‐defect‐based order‐disorder as the phase transformation mechanism. The phase transformation (Curie) temperature is predicted to decrease linearly with deviation from stoichiometry in agreement with experimental observations.
