Torque measurements and the electronmicroscopic observation of superlattice dislocations are made in the long range ordered Ni—24.9 at% Fe single crystal, in order to study the relation between the compression-induced magnetic anisotropy and the dislocation density and its distribution. The compression-induced anisotropy has the direction of easy magnetization near the [001] direction in the (110) plane below 3% strain and above the strain, between the [110] and [111] directions. The experimental results are explained quantitatively according to a previously proposed model with the assumption that the new magnetic anisotropy is induced by the dislocation slipping over the {111} thermally induced APB.
