The recent suggestion from this laboratory that the refraction correction for cylindrical cells in the `Sofica' photometer was closer to the refractive index n than n 2 is shown herein to be a result of originally incorrect alignment of the instrument detector. The common method of positioning the receiver unit of these instruments is to adjust for no dissymmetry in the polar scattering diagram using a pure liquid scatterer. This is shown to be inadequate. When only the fluorescence from a dilute aqueous fluorescein solution is observed, the receiver can be aligned for both angular symmetry and a correct volume scattering factor without considering the depolarization effects encountered with pure liquids. When carefully adjusted in this manner, the instrument also corresponds to an n 2 refraction correction factor.
