We present a realistic optical model for polarizers, one that can be included easily in computations of the optical properties of liquid-crystal devices. To calculate the indices of refraction for a given polarizer, we derive an approximate expression for the transmittance of a two-polarizer system under normally incident light, including multiple reflections at the various interfaces. Comparisons are made between calculated and measured transmittances for a single polarizer and for two crossed polarizers under various angles of incidence.
