Calculations are performed of the lifetimes of the 1s2s2p 4 P 5/2 states of He - and lithium which decay to the 1s 2 f 2 F 5/2 continuum through the spin-spin interaction. A variety of wave functions are used, including the correlated wave functions of Holøien. Without correlation the lifetimes lie close to 4 × 10 -4 sec and 6 × 10 -5 sec for He - and lithium, respectively, but are increased by an order of magnitude by the inclusion of correlation.
