The concept of ‘balance in lifestyle’ is examined from an occupational perspective. The current suggestion that balance is achieved by the development of personal capabilities through engagement in individually meaningful occupations is discussed and the element of control is suggested as being significant. Balance is achieved in a dynamic process of change. The balancing process in individuals is believed to support the maintenance of health and well‐being. The actions of individuals seeking balance will resonate through their families, networks, groups, communities and the wider society, each of which can also be examined and changed in order to achieve a health promoting balance. A cycle of processes by which balance may be achieved is proposed. It is suggested that research into the many aspects of balance should be undertaken.
