This paper presents a method of finding an optimal linear voltage regulator for a single machine infinite bus power system. The performance criterion chosen is of the form The assumptions of controllability and observability are verified for the power system model. A method is suggested for choosing the weighting matrices Q and R from considerations of the transient response of the overall system. A detailed example of an automatic voltage regulator connected to a 30 MW machine is given for reference purpose.
