In this paper, we introduce a customized laser scanning system constructed with a high-accuracy range sensor and an X – Y stage, and discuss the methods of using this scanning system to detect and characterize wrinkles on laminated plastic sheets on a 10 µm scale. We also report a trial test on six samples containing various types of wrinkles in order to validate the performance of the system, and particularly its repeatability when multiple scans of the same specimens are compared. The validation test demonstrated that the system was able to output highly accurate and repeatable data for wrinkling characterization of laminated plastic sheets.
