Optical absorption, magnetic anisotropy and the paramagnetic resonance of several hydrated salts of the Ni 2+ ion have been correlated by assuming an orthorhombic field superimposed on the cubic field and the spin-orbit coupling. In considering this theory, we have included in the crystalline field Hamiltonian the quartic rhombic field in addition to the usual quadratic one. Our theoretical results are in good agreement with all the fine structures of the bands and the lines experimentally obtained by Hartmann and Muller in 1958, Mookherji and Chhonkar in 1960, and are also consistent with the magnetic anisotropy and paramagnetic resonance data. The cubic and the rhombic field parameters are found to vary with temperature, and the Racah coefficients and the spin-orbit coupling coefficient are reduced appreciably due to covalency.
