The crystal field of ruby and the stress-induced crystal field of MgO:Cr3+ are re-expressed in terms of a semiempirical model of the crystal field. In this model, which allows for overlap and covalency, the observed crystal field parameters are related to the crystal field parameters for the single ligand system, Cr–O. The latter parameters are obtained for each system; they are constant for the two lattices to within 15%. This is indirect evidence for the existence of static relaxation around the Cr3+ ion. The dynamic properties of the bond and the consistency of the analyses are discussed.
