Recent developments in the use of echelle grating and multiple-beam interferometer dispersers for laser diagnosis and u.v. solar spectroscopy are reviewed. Applications described include (i) measurement of temporal and spatial coherence of laser beams; (ii) nanosecond time-resolved spectroscopy of narrow-band pulsed lasers with image-tube streaking cameras; (iii) studies of second harmonic and sum frequency generation; (iv) frequency tuning of organic dye lasers; and (v) compact high resolution rocket spectrographs.
