Low temperature polarised absorption, and emission as well as excitation spectra of Mn 2+ in Na 2 Mn 3 Cl 8 single crystals are reported. Eight d—d bands are observed in the optical spectra with some additional fine features. Analysis of the spectra indicates octahedral site symmetry around the hexacoordinated Mn 2+ ion. The general features of the spectra are analysed quite satisfactorily within the framework of the strong field scheme of Tanabe and Sugano including Trees' correction. The finer spectral details are accounted for by invoking vibronic interactions involving different sites.
