A flash photolysis apparatus is described. The photoflash discharge tube forms the inner conductor of a quasi‐coaxial line connected by a triggered spark gap to the storage capacitor. Some operating characteristics of the spark gap are given. The range of flash energy is 50–1500 J at pulse durations of less than 10 μs in the visible region. A capillary discharge is used for spectroflash with 150 J max. energy, triggered by a similar spark gap. Combined with a continuous light source, several types of experiments may be carried out: flash photolysis, kinetic spectrophotometry with observation of transient absorption, and emission spectra. The sample area is sufficiently flexible to allow the use of a wide variety of cells, permitting studies over a wide range of temperature.
