Stefan's measurement of the thermal conductivity of gases, the first experiment to confirm results of the kinetic theory of gases, is considered in a historical setting. The measurement of the thermal conductivity of air and its independence of pressure is repeated using a somewhat adapted form of Stefan's 'diathermometer'. The method is not demanding and is suitable for use in student's laboratories.
