A new parameter, pressure, has been introduced into study of the electrical properties of polymers, in particular into the thermal breakdown theory for modelling of the breakdown field F b variations of high-density polyethylene versus pressure. Theoretical F b values, determined by numerical calculation of the fundamental heat balance equation and the analytical expression of the conductivity, are compared with experimental results obtained in the pressure range 50-500 bar. Good agreement was observed in this comparison.
