The dispersion characteristics of broadside-coupled suspended substrate transmission lines are analysed using the spectral domain technique. Numerical data on the normalized guide-wavelength and characteristic impedance of the dominant even-and odd-modes of broadside-coupled suspended substrate transmission lines are presented. The effect of shielding the side and top walls on the dispersion characteristics is studied. The dispersion characteristics of broadside-coupled structures with dielectric substrates suspended in the E-plane of a rectangular waveguide are also computed. In these structures, the dominant mode normalized guide wavelengths and characteristic impedances decrease marginally (within 3%) as the frequency increases up to 60 GHz. The proposed structures should find extensive application in couplers, coupled line filters and transitions from rectangular wave guides to suspended microstrips and inverted microstrips.
