Summary. A nonlinear theory of the cross-field instability is presented in which the energy is transferred by mode coupling from large to small wavelengths, where it is absorbed by linear damping (classical diffusion). The parameters are chosen to fit the conditions prevailing in the equatorial electrojet when the instability is most easily observed.
