Quantitative data are reported on the surface nitridation of titanium, zirconium and hafnium samples by multi-pulse microsecond-pulsed high-intensity TEA CO 2 laser irradiation in nitrogen atmospheres containing oxygen impurities. The possibility of controlling the competition between oxidation/nitridation processes by recording the reflectivity of the pulsed laser action zone in the light of a supplementary, low-power CW CO 2 laser source is revealed.
