The effect of the earth's magnetic field on ambipolar diffusion at ionospheric heights is considered. It is shown that the geomagnetic field will increase the lifetime of an ionized cloud at 150-km altitude by more than an order of magnitude and that a spherically symmetrical cloud becomes markedly ellipsoidal in shape owing to the anisotropic diffusion. The electric and magnetic fields induced by the azimuthal current distribution are also discussed.
