During exposure to hypoxic conditions in darkness, Anthopleura elegantissima remains contracted and incurs a physiological oxygen debt. Both of these phenomena are eliminated by maintaining anemones in the light, but not if photosynthesis by their endosymbiotic zooxanthellae is chemically inhibited, suggesting that the intracellular production of O 2 stimulates expansion and enables aerobic metabolism to continue.
