The percentage of patients achieving complete remission has increased. The median durations of these remissions have lengthened, and the percentage of longterm survivors has risen. Ten years ago, a 25% remission rate for adults was exceptional. Today complete remission rates of more than 50% are regularly achieved in large cooperative group trials (1,2), and using combinations that include an anthracycline antibiotic (daunorubicin hydrochloride or doxorubicin hydrochloride), cytarabine, and 6-thioguanine or 6-mercaptopurine, complete remission rates of more than 80% have been reported by several...References1.
