Previous low angle quasielastic light scattering measurements of diffusion coefficients of binary systems of small molecules are prejudiced by errors from the spread in scattering vector introduced by finite sample volume or finite aperture size. A high power laser heterodyne spectrometer has been assembled which permits observation of spectra at scattering angles far from those at which finite volume errors arise. The characteristics of this system have been investigated and are described. The spectrometer has been used to determine the mutual diffusion coefficients of binary mixtures of primary alcohols in nitrobenzene and carbon disulfide. The effects of concentration and chain length on viscous drag in these systems have been studied. To demonstrate the influence of hydrogen bonding on diffusion the mutual diffusion coefficient in binary systems of hexane in nitrobenzene and hexane in carbon disulfide has also been measured. Finally an estimate has been made of the diffusion coefficient in the acetone/carbon disulfide system previously studied.
