A method for the rapid design of thin-lens cemented triplets is described. It may be used for any primary aberration target, and is based on the concept of normalized aberrations and curvatures and on a set of precomputed isometric plots. These plots provide a good starting point, from which an exact solution is then obtained by using a specially written computer program. The ranges of spherical aberration and coma that are considered are those over which cemented doublets and triplets have the same primary aberration, but over which the latter suffer less from higher-order aberrations. The technique is applied to the design of an Erfle-type eyepiece.
