A theoretical study of excitation waves propagating in two-dimensional excitable media through the boundary line between two areas with different properties is presented and compared with available experimental evidences. Based on the kinematic approach, a complete set of steady wave-front configurations have been constructed for unbounded media, for media confined in a half-plane, and for a strip. Our results confirm the experimentally observed Snell's law for incident and refracted autowaves, and the existence of a critical angle for total internal reflection. {} 1996 The American Physical Society.
