The formation of an N + ion beam can be accompanied by the formation of N 2 2+ . When collision processes involving N + are studied, the N 2 2+ can also enter into a variety of reactions with quite large cross sections, which introduce large errors in the cross sections associated with the N + processes. Data are given for the N 2 2+ content in the ion beam coming from the typical electron impact source; cross sections are measured for the N 2 2+ collision in N 2 through the energy range 1.2 to 4.0 keV. Assuming that the majority of N 2 2+ ions are in their ground state at the time of collision, a set of most probable reactions are chosen which best fit our data. They are Finally, the effects of these reactions on previously measured cross sections for N + in various gases are discussed.
