The TOPIC and CLARIT information retrieval systems are discussed in terms of assigned vs. derived and precoordinate vs. postcoordinate indexing. The document representations of the two systems are compared. A test was done on a small sample of Wall Street Journal articles. The positive results found for CLARIT in earlier tests on medical documents were not observed in this general database.
