Two techniques have been employed to examine the turnover of the protein portion of acyl carrier protein, the conjugated protein which is the acyl carrier for fatty acid biosynthesis in Escherichia coli. The protein was shown to be metabolically stable, in contrast to its covalently bound 4'-phosphopantetheine prosthetic group which was previously found to undergo turnover at the rate of 4% per min (Powell, G. L., Elovson, J., and Vagelos, P. R. (1969) J. Biol. Chem. 244, 5616–5624).
