A cooperative research effort has greatly improved the overall prognosis of infants with coliform meningitis by demonstrating a strong correlation between the presence of a particular antigen (one of nearly 300 antigens possessed by E. Coli) and the pathogen's ability to infect the C N s and produce a highly lethal, purulent disease. More effective management is already at hand and future prevention may become possible.
