This article investigates the role of the African diaspora, particularly in Canada, as one of the key drivers of development of the African continent. The paper first examines definitions of key terms – Africa(n), diaspora and philanthropy – to provide clarity and avoid perpetuating stereotypes. Next, it discusses the nexus between African Canadian diaspora philanthropy and development. The article concludes by assessing the strengths and limitations of African Canadian philanthropy. Despite challenges, such as a lack of support from governments and civil society, the African Canadian diaspora remains a crucial and dynamic actor for sustainable and inclusive development in Africa.
