In studying the angular distribution of sputtered material from gold monocrystals when bombarded by 70 key molecular and atomic nitrogen ions some peaks have been observed at the angles θ 2 ε [80, 90°] with respect to the direction of ion incidence. It has been able to account for the origin of these peaks by the contribution to sputtering of surface primary recoils ejected from the target once after a single collision with the incident particles. The angular widths of observed peaks have been measured for two cases of ion beam orientation with respect to the target.
