Four possible isomers of 2-methyl-3, 5-dihydroxy ester derivatives, useful building blocks for natural product synthesis, were synthesized stereoselectively using C3-hydroxyl-directed methylation of β-hydroxy-δ-lactone and β, δ-dihydroxy ester.
